Final Blog Prompt - Mario Lincoln

Olia Lialina's "My Boyfriend Came Back From the War" is considered to be one of the earliest examples of interactive storytelling through HTML code. Its narrative details the relationship issues between a couple that arise after the man has returned from war. But it's the way the narrative is presented that was groundbreaking for the time. Through the use of HTML coding, Lialina presents to the viewer a powerful narrative, so powerful that it's often considered to be akin to cinema and film. She directly challenges how we thought that we could present a story by putting it in a space that very few had attempted before. It's a reflection of society not only continues to tell stories, but further adapts them to reach even larger audiences. That's what our project was focused on, "How can I tell a full story using HTML?" Not only was it a testament for accessibility, but also with the longevity HTML has. Through archiving and records, it's still accessible to this day. Many artists still cite it as being a pillar of the digital space, with others recreating and remixing it into new mediums that Lialina personally encourages artists to do.
